About City Mayors

Comments in support of
Patrick Ramiaramanana
Mayor of Antananarivo (Madagascar)

The finalists for the 2006 World Mayor Award were chosen on the number of votes received as well as on the persuasiveness and conviction of supporting statements. Below we publish an representative selection of comments received about the mayor.

Comment: In spite of the poverty in Madagascar, Patric Ramiaramanana, Mayor of Antananarivo, has changed the city to makes visitor and the poor citizen believe that it is possible to keep the city attractive, clean, with well maintained infrastructure with a minimum of money. Thus, beauty, good management and security does not always need to cost huge amounts of money. The Mayor has succeeded thanks to his personal skills, courage and management style.

Comment: My first impression about the Malagasy capital city was not at all a pleasant one when I first went there six years ago: anarchy, insecurity, poverty, garbage everywhere, and many other outward signs of a city in decline. I honestly thought that Antananarivo was a doomed city that would never see the light of progress (I know it's a little too much but it's what I thought). I came back to Tana (as people living in Antananarivo call their beloved city) about a year ago (I must say against my will), and I was really amazed by the changes that have happened to the city. There is still a lot to do to put Tana among the best cities on earth, but it would be completely unfair not to appreciate the effort that was made to clean up the city. It requires dedication and extremely hard works to put up such changes in a fairly short amount of time. The current Mayor of Antananarivo should be given credit for that.

Comment: Mr. Ramiaramana has been at the forefront of developing eco-tourism for his region, balancing respect for the environment with the needs of the people living there!

Comment: I chose Mayor Ramiaramanana because of his strong will to try improve the quality of life in his city despite the great poverty in Madagascar.

Comment: Mr. Ramiaramana has been at the forefront of developing eco-tourism for his region, balancing respect for the environment with the needs of the people living there.

More than 100,000 citizens froum around the world have taken part in the 2006 World Mayor Project. The results will be announced on 5 December.
