WORLD MAYOR 2018
Dedicated to women mayors

The 2018 World Mayor Prize and Commendations will be conferred on women mayors who have made outstanding and long-lasting contributions to their communities. The organisers wish to show what outstanding women mayors achieve all over the world. By doing so, they hope to encourage more women to contemplate a career in local government and run for political office. The women, who will be awarded the 2018 World Mayor Prize and other honours, will be role models for young women and, indeed, men everywhere. Carmen Yulín Cruz, Mayor of San Juan (Puerto Rico), USA, was shortlisted for the 2018 World Mayor Prize.

Nominations for
Carmen Yulín Cruz
Mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico (USA)

Nominated by Gerhard G., New York City:
Since, in September 2017, Hurricane Maria caused devastation to Puerto Rico and its capital city San Juan, Mayor Cruz has been fighting for those on the Island who suffered most. In her pursuit for desperately needed help, she has taken on the might of Washington DC. She has also vividly described the plight of her people in front of international audiences. Carmen Cruz is brave, resourceful und tenacious – a true lioness.

Nominated by Sue W., Texas, USA:
She is the face of strength and stands up to power…which makes her powerful. I can't see a more deserving Mayor for this honor.

Nominated by DBO., Oakland, CA, USA:
Mayor Carmen is focusing world attention on the devastation that continues to engulf Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, and the 2nd class status of these American citizens.

Nominated by Anne J., Oakland, CA, USA:
I'm voting for the Mayor of San Juan. I live in Oakland. I know just how bad Libby Schaaf is.

Nominated by Marsha A., Texas:
Ms. Cruz embodies bravery and dedication to her people. Her fight with the White House to win appropriate federal hurricane response has been awe inspiring. She stands up for democracy and equality on the world stage.

Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price does not belong on this list. She has ruined this city by over development resulting in its gentrification. She is also leading an assault on the City's retirees by slashng their cost of living raises unnecessarily.

Nominated by Alan W., Texas:
This mayor acted heroically in the face of the most dire circumstances and continues to do so.

Nominated by Bill, USA:
This is someone who stood up for people continuously even when Trump didn't provide enough help thanks.

Nominated by L. A., USA:
Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz has been a steadfast supporter of the citizens of her city, using many avenues to try to get them the help that they so desperately need. She is not afraid to speak up on behalf of her citizen's needs, even standing up to Donald Trump when necessary.

I am voting for her, rather than Betsy Price, the mayor of the city I reside in (who cares more about bicycle lanes than the undocumented, homeless or poor), because Mayor Cruz truly cares about ALL of her citizens. Mayor Cruz is the type of mayor I wish I had. Mayor Cruz stands up for all her citizens, regardless of their race, income level, or lack of proper housing - and she is not afraid of losing political power or points to do what is right for them!

Mayor Cruz was even nominated as Time's Person of the Year!

Challenges for San Juan:
The devastation that Hurricane Maria brought to her city and country, as well as the indifference of Donald Trump to their problems.
Solutions:
Obtaining aid for her city to recover from Hurricane Maria.

Cruz's administration continues her predecessor Jorge Santini's plans for the revitalization of the Río Piedras district.[28] The first phase of this plan consisted of the restoration of historic buildings in the subdivision.[28] An economic plan spearheaded by José Rivera-Santana promoted incentives for housing and establishment of new businesses in Río Piedras, in an attempt to salvage the economic importance that the district once had.[28] This was complemented with direct communication and collaboration with the local community and several institutions, including the University of Puerto Rico.[28] Among the initiatives to revitalize the municipal economy, Cruz proposed the absolute elimination of the 7% sales tax (IVU) in Río Piedras for a period of four years.[29] This would be the first time that any zone would receive such an exemption, giving small and local businesses a strategic edge over "big box" corporations.
