World Mayor 2008
every vote counts
During the first round of World Mayor 2008, held in 2007, more than 100,000 citizens from around the world nominated some 820 mayors for the World Mayor title. Based on the number and quality of nominations, the editorial board of City Mayors, the organisers of the contest, selected 50 mayors from across the world, who proceed to the final round. Profiles of many of the shortlisted mayors have been written. More will be added. VOTING CLOSES AT THE END OF JUNE. The results will be announced in September.
You are now invited to choose, from the list of 50 finalists below, the mayor(s) you believe most worthy of the title World Mayor 2008 by commenting on their achievements but also, if you wish, on their shortcomings. Please comment, in English, on why the mayor(s) you voted for deserve to win the World Mayor Award.
Finalists from: Africa | North America | Latin America | Asia | Europe |
The City Mayors editorial board will choose the winner and runner ups based on the number of comments received and the persuasiveness and passion of arguments. The organisers believe that the strength of argument is as important as the number of comments. This ensures that a ‘good’ mayor from a smaller city can compete on equal terms with a mayor from a large metropolis. Starting in March 2008, selected comments will be published on this website. Please ensure that your comment is legal, informed, fair and not abusive.
Nomination form for World Mayor 2008
All comments are read by editors of World Mayor. Multiple comments for one mayor are eliminated. IMPORTANT: YOU MUST ENTER THE NAME OF CITY OF THE MAYOR TOGETHER WITH YOUR COMMENT IN THE COMMENT BOX. Thank you for participating in the World Mayor 2008 project.
*On 13 February 2008 Walter Veltroni resigned as Mayor of Rome to campaign to become Italian Prime Minister.
** Pierre Albertini was defeated in local elections held on 9 March 2008.
